I’ve recently been talking a lot about Fashion Personality in my styling class and so I decided why not share some of this knowledge with the rest of you!?
Do you know what fashion personality is?
For those of you that don’t know, Fashion Personality – is an individual’s unique way of expressing oneself through clothing (Your Personal Style by Nancy Plummer). By carefully analyzing someone and the way they’re dressed, you can assume where they’re going, what they plan on doing and even sometimes their mood.
It sounds more difficult than what it actually is. Take yourself for example, when you’re feeling down, you’re usually not in the mood to dress up and when you’re in a great mood, it’s usually reflected in the way you dress. Hence, wearing black to ceremonies such as a funeral. Bright colors are usually associated with a better mood than darker colors.
Do you wear bright colors when you’re in a good mood?
Try this for a day– Pick a great site for people watching and look for clothing cues that will help you identify where each person is headed and what type of lives they lead.
When breaking down Fashion Personalities, there are 5 main fashion personalities that everyone can relate to:
Sporty- wears casual, comfortable, athletic clothing. This person is usually outgoing , enjoys activities, and enjoys being spontaneous. Their clothing choices are comfortable and american chic, such as denim jeans, white traditional button down shirt, khaki pants, cable knit cardigan, etc.
Romantic- wears feminine, delicate pieces. This person is detail oriented, very feminine, sensitive, and idealistic. Their clothing choices consist of soft fabrics, lace, ruffles, corsets, tulip skirts, and anything sweet.
Classic- wears tailored and conservative, essentially sticking to everlasting fashions and basics. This person is traditional, efficient, organized, and reliable. Their clothing choices are basics and essential pieces to build a strong wardrobe such as the little black dress, trench coat, black pencil skirt, black turtleneck, 100% cotton t-shirts, and a cashmere cardigan.
Natural- wears simple, untreated, and neutral pieces. Their characteristics fall under authentic, trustworthy, open, and stable. This person’s fashion choices are earthy tones and organic fabrics such organic cotton tees, khaki pants, stretch flare leg pants, relaxed fit denim jeans, and a relaxed fit denim flare skirt.
Dramatic- this personality likes to stand out and be seen. They wear bold, unique, and colorful pieces. They are bold, ingenious, stimulating, and always seeking change. Their clothing choices are bright-colored patterned tops, mini skirts, slim fit denim jeans, dresses with plenty of details, giant rings and jewelry, and trendy dresses.
So which fashion personality do you classify yourself into?
For some of us classifying ourselves into one group isn’t so easy! As a matter of fact many of us fall into multiple categories depending on our moods and what events we’re dressing for. Nevertheless, this is a great way to decide what fashions and looks belong in your closet and which ones don’t! #wardrobeevaluation
For those of us looking to revamp our wardrobe I would suggest to begin with classic pieces first; buy essentials and the most expensive basic pieces and then shop for the trendier, more dramatic, and less expensive pieces after. In using this format, you are guaranteed to spend your money wisely.
So go ahead, evaluate your personal style and begin to build a fashionista worthy wardrobe!!!
